Carolyn's Obituary -

Carolyn Joan Briney Sheets, 80, passed on Sept 24 , 2014 in Sun City West, Az. Born June 2, 1934 in Frankfort, IN to Robert Briney and Clara Branigan Briney, Carolyn was a good student and natural athlete with a love of Tennis. She was the Frankfort city women's tennis champion for 5 years in a row from age 13 to 18. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard "Dick" Sheets in 1952 and a year later had their first child, Rick. A second son, Greg followed 2 ½ years later. Having suffered a stroke from a brain aneurysm at age 19 while pregnant with Rick and became partially paralyzed, she was keenly aware of the stigma and perceived limitations of being different. She refused to accept them, running a loving household where we never considered her handicapped.

Mom was always a feminist and teacher at heart so in 1965 she started to college. She graduated from ASU in 1972 to begin her 25 year career of teaching special education at Osborne Middle School in Phoenix. She also earned her Master’s Degree in Education 1976.

The folks moved to Sun City West in 1998 where Mom & Dad became very active in the “Handi-capables” group in Sun City West. They developed many friendships and were blessed with 15 years of retirement life before Dad died in 2013, just 2 weeks short of their 61st anniversary.

Mom taught us many enduring lessons including: “Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.” She is survived by: son-Rick (& Barbara) Sheets of Sun City West, AZ; son-Greg Sheets (& Gary Beavan) of Yakima, WA; brother-Robert Briney of Indianapolis; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Camino Del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West, AZ on Sat. , Sept. 23, 2014 with viewing at 9:30am and services at 10:30 am. In lieu of providing flowers, she had requested donations may be made to: Handicapables of Sun City West (c/o Peter Onni  17403 N. 130th Dr, Sun City West AZ 85375, Ph: 623-584-6222), the Special Oylmpics , or Gideon Bibles International.

This verse was originally written for Clara Briney, 20 years ago. It was a special favorite of Carolyn's and so has been re-dedicated to her. Feel free to share it with others.
